Basic Red Pasta Sauce with Ground Beef

Feel free to modify this sauce - chopped carrots can go in with the onion, you could use ground pork or totally omit the meat, any sort of tomato will work, and you can play with fresh or dried herbs to make this your own.

We often make a double batch and freeze the extra sauce for another day.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 28-oz can diced tomatoes or 1 3/4 lb fresh tomatoes
  • 1 6-oz can tomato paste
  • dried or fresh herbs of your choice - Italian seasoning works great.
  • 1 lb of your favorite pasta

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef until just browned and still pink in the center.
  2. While the beef cooks, boil water for the pasta and cook pasta according to package directions.
  3. When beef is just browned, move it to one side of the skillet and cook onions on the empty side, stirring occasionally, until soft. Add garlic and stir for one minute.
  4. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, and spices to skillet; simmer until beef is cooked through. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  5. Top with parmesan and enjoy!
