After checkout, you will receive an email with a link where you can select other packages for your first delivery. There are currently many boxes to choose from.
The deposit is a true deposit, not a fee. All of our deposits are refunded when you end your membership.
The $49 deposit is used as a buffer to account for the fact that we can't deliver exactly the amount of each person's budget every month. The boxes aren't all exactly the same size. Just because we estimate a 10 pound box will be $100, doesn't mean they actually cost $100. The amount of your box might be 11.5 pounds and cost $115. Everyone pays for the items they receive. For the most part, the boxes are pretty close to the estimated value. The $49 means we have more flexibility in recommending boxes and don't have to be under budget or exactly on target.
Larger deposits are used to help fund the actual operating capital required for our business. We have been fortunate to never have any loans and most of the business has been funded through our personal investment. For members who want to contribute to that, we offer a fairly considerable discount of 2% for the $299 level or 6% for the $899 deposit level.
In order to have the variety and options for members, we always have around $200 - $300k of inventory. If every member chips in their share of the inventory cost, it makes the business easier to grow and maintain. So if you had a $400 budget, a 6% discount would translate to an annual savings of around $290.
Members at the $899 deposit level also get the first chance to pre-order our seasonal items like turkey, lamb and our forest hog. We sometimes have ticketed events that these members also get to pre-order. We try really hard to have enough of those specialty items for everyone. All members get the opportunity to order them, but they still always sell out.
