In a dozen years of working closely with local farmers, we have found that every type of food system requires farmers to raise extra food just to ensure they have enough to fill their customers’ orders. It is often difficult to ensure all the food goes to good use -- Especially with local produce. Throughout the industry, much of that extra food just gets left in the field or composted. This artificially increases the cost of well raised local food while also wasting healthy food that could be put to better use.
Meanwhile, families who face food insecurity often have limited healthy food options. Children are especially hard hit on the weekends when their school provided breakfasts and lunches are not available. This leads to worse health outcomes, struggles in school, and long-term systemic inequality in our community.
With TC Feeds Foundation, we are building an efficient system that compensates farmers to harvest their extra product, prepares healthy ready to eat meals, and then provides these meals along with fresh items directly to those who need them most.
