Our organic orzo comes from a region near Naples, at the beginning of the Amalfi Coast, in the town where pasta was born. We make it the traditional way, with patience, wheat and water, and it is handcrafted in Italy.
- Bronze die extruded for remarkable texture: the rough, naturally porous surface absorbs and captures every type of sauce
- Dried slowly at low temperatures, which preserves the pasta's color, texture and aroma and its fresh-bread flavor
- Made with Italian organic durum wheat semolina and nothing else, certified organic and kosher
Orzo is a pastina, a tiny pasta cut named for its small barley shape, just a little larger than a grain of rice. We select and blend the highest quality Italian organic durum wheat for a golden color and high protein content, which helps each piece keep its shape and structure. The wheat is expertly milled into coarse semolina and kneaded with cold, mineral-rich mountain spring water, and it cooks up perfectly al dente: tender, but firm to the bite. It is Non GMO, preservative free and vegan.
Orzo is famous in broth-based soups like Italian Wedding Soup, Stuffed Pepper Soup and Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup. These days it is more than just a soup pasta, starring in picnic pasta salads and cheesy side dishes. We love it in a summery orzo caprese with pesto, cherry tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella, or in a salad with crumbled feta, chickpeas, olives, spinach, basil and lemon. For a side, toss it with fresh herbs, roasted seasonal veggies and grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, bake it into orzo mac and cheese, or use it in place of rice in nearly any recipe.
The only difference between this and our classic DeLallo Orzo is the durum wheat: here it is certified organic. At DeLallo, a family company established in 1950, our passion is to craft and share wonderful Italian food.
Ingredients: ITALIAN ORGANIC DURUM WHEAT SEMOLINA.
Common Questions
What kind of pasta can I use instead of rice?
Orzo is the usual choice, and our DeLallo Organic Orzo #65 can stand in for rice in nearly any recipe. Orzo is a pastina, a tiny pasta cut named for its small barley shape, which is only slightly larger than a grain of rice. It is still a wheat pasta, made from one ingredient, Italian organic durum wheat semolina, and you boil it in salted water like any other pasta. We like it in grain bowls and in side dishes with fresh herbs, seasonal roasted veggies and grated Parmigiano-Reggiano.
What pasta is best for Italian Wedding Soup or Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup?
A small cut like orzo is the classic pick, and our DeLallo Organic Orzo #65 is made for broth-based soups such as Italian Wedding Soup, Stuffed Pepper Soup and Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup. Tiny pasta fits on a spoon alongside meatballs, chicken and diced vegetables. We blend Italian organic durum wheat for high protein content, which helps the pasta keep its shape and structure. Small pasta keeps soaking up broth as it sits, so for leftovers many cooks boil the orzo separately and add it to each bowl.
Is bronze-die pasta worth it?
If you want sauce to cling, yes, and our DeLallo Organic Orzo #65 is bronze die extruded for that reason. Pushing the dough through bronze dies gives the pasta a rough, naturally porous surface that absorbs and captures every type of sauce. Many mass-market pastas use Teflon-coated dies, which produce a smoother, shinier surface. We also dry our orzo slowly at low temperatures to reproduce the traditional way of making pasta, which helps it keep its fresh-bread flavor, nutrients and texture. The result cooks up al dente, tender but firm to the bite.
Is DeLallo Organic Orzo vegan and gluten free?
DeLallo Organic Orzo is vegan, and it is not gluten free. Its only ingredient is Italian organic durum wheat semolina, and the ingredient list has no eggs, peanuts or tree nuts. Durum wheat naturally contains gluten, and we deliberately choose organic wheat with the highest gluten index, gluten content and protein content because those traits shape how the pasta cooks, tastes and feels. It is certified organic and kosher, and it is Non GMO and preservative free. Contains wheat.
What is the difference between DeLallo Orzo and DeLallo Organic Orzo?
The only difference between DeLallo Orzo and DeLallo Organic Orzo is the durum wheat: both use premium quality durum wheat, and in the Organic Orzo that wheat is certified organic. We also make a separate DeLallo Organic Whole-Wheat Orzo, where the whole kernel is ground into the semolina flour. For our Organic Orzo #65, we select and blend Italian organic durum wheat for a golden color, and it is expertly milled into semolina.

What can I make with DeLallo Organic Orzo besides soup?
Our DeLallo Organic Orzo works in pasta salads, grain bowls, side dishes and baked pasta recipes. For a bake, we suggest an orzo macaroni and cheese; cooking the orzo a minute or two short of al dente keeps it from going soft in the oven. It is also an excellent feature in cold summer pasta salads, such as one with crumbled feta, chickpeas, olives, spinach, basil and lemon. We love it in a summery orzo caprese with pesto, cherry tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella.
