Current Stock:
Hu was born in 2012 as a restaurant called Hu Kitchen in New York City. Our bakers back then needed a delicious baking chocolate that met our simple-ingredient rules, but we just couldn't find one. So we decided to create our own.

Fold them into chocolate chip cookies, or use them anywhere a recipe calls for semi-sweet chips. They're just as good eaten straight from the bag. Bakers tell us the chips aren't too sweet and have a great chocolate taste, and families say they can't tell the difference from regular chocolate chips.

They're shelf-stable, so a 7 oz bag can wait in the pantry until the next baking day.

Ingredients: ORGANIC UNREFINED COCONUT SUGAR*, ORGANIC CACAO*, ORGANIC COCOA BUTTER*

Common Questions

What chocolate chips are made without refined sugar or sugar alcohols?
Our Hu Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips are made with no refined sugar, no cane sugar and no sugar alcohols like erythritol. We sweeten them with organic unrefined coconut sugar. Most conventional chocolate chips are sweetened with cane sugar, and many "sugar-free" chips swap in sugar alcohols such as erythritol. Shoppers tell us they love that the only sweetener is coconut sugar.

Which chocolate chips are soy-free and have no lecithin?
Hu Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips are soy-free and made with no lecithins. Many chocolate chips list soy lecithin, an emulsifier added to help chocolate flow during manufacturing. We leave it out, and the whole ingredient list is three items: organic unrefined coconut sugar, organic cacao and organic cocoa butter. Across our chocolate line, we follow the same ingredient guardrails we set at our restaurant, which also rule out palm oil.

Are there paleo and vegan chocolate chips for baking?
Yes, our Hu Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips are declared both paleo and vegan. Paleo bakers usually look for chips without refined sugar, and vegan bakers need chips without milk ingredients, which some semi-sweet chips contain. Our chips are sweetened with coconut sugar and have no milk in the recipe. Paleo is where Hu started: we opened in 2012 as Hu Kitchen, a paleo-inspired fast-casual restaurant in New York City, and that is where our food philosophy and chocolate line began.

What are Hu Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips made of?
Hu Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips are made with three ingredients: organic unrefined coconut sugar, organic cacao and organic cocoa butter. That means the chips contain coconut, in the form of coconut sugar. We made them because our bakers at Hu Kitchen needed a delicious baking chocolate that met our simple-ingredient rules, couldn't find one, and so we created our own. Our promise for them is baking chips with no weird ingredients. Ever.

How sweet are Hu semi-sweet chocolate chips?
Shoppers describe our Hu Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips as not too sweet, with a great chocolate taste. Semi-sweet is the classic middle ground for baking chips, sweeter than bittersweet and darker than milk chocolate. Families who bake with ours say they don't notice a difference from the regular chocolate chips they used before.

Can I use Hu chocolate chips in cookies, and can you eat them straight from the bag?
Yes to both: our Hu Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips are made for baking and snacking. Shoppers use them most in chocolate chip cookies and other baked goods, and some eat them right out of the bag. Each bag holds 7 oz (198 g), so a classic cookie recipe written for a 12 oz bag of chips needs a little under two bags. They are shelf-stable, so they can live in the pantry until baking day. Bake your little hearts out.

Are Hu baking chips organic, gluten-free and Fair Trade?
Yes. We declare our Hu Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips organic, gluten-free and Fair Trade, and they are also kosher and non-GMO. All three ingredients are organic: the coconut sugar, the cacao and the cocoa butter. Shoppers who bake with health in mind often choose them as a cleaner chocolate chip.
