Tulips Tips - Care Guide

The Ultimate Care Guide for Your Tulip Blooms
When You First Get Them Home
Follow these steps for the best results:
- Unwrap with care: Remove any delivery packaging gently to avoid damaging the delicate stems.
- Fresh cut: Using sharp scissors or pruning shears, trim about 1/2 inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This creates more surface area for water absorption and removes any dried-out portions.
- Clean the stems: Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline in your vase. These submerged leaves quickly decompose, creating bacteria that shortens flower life.
- Prepare your vase: Fill a clean vase with cool water (tulips prefer it on the colder side).
Daily Care
To keep your tulips looking fresh and vibrant:
- Change water daily: Empty and refill your vase with fresh, cold water every day or at minimum every other day.
- Re-trim stems: Each time you change the water, give stems a fresh cut of about 1/4 inch to maintain optimal water uptake.
- Location matters: Display your tulips away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and ripening fruit (which releases ethylene gas that speeds flower aging).
- Keep it cool: Tulips thrive in cooler environments. A room temperature between 60-65°F (15-18°C) is ideal.

Extending Bloom Life
Don't panic if your tulips start to droop! Their stems continue to grow in the vase and sometimes bend in search of light.
- Simply trim them down or make sure that you have a tall enough vase to hold them
- At night, you can place them in a cooler location to extend their life
When to Say Goodbye
With proper care, Megans tulips typically last 5-7 days. The cooler the environment, the longer they'll generally last. When petals begin to fall and stems become slimy, it's time to compost your bouquet.
Remember, part of the beauty of tulips is their ephemeral nature—they remind us to appreciate the present moment and the simple joys in life.
