To make sure we're providing the healthiest, purest sardines available, we mercury test every catch to a limit of 0.1 ppm, so you can enjoy this nutritious superfood with confidence. We think it's a healthier and better tasting sardine.
- 23g protein per can
- Averages over 1,600mg of omega-3 fatty acids per serving, a natural source of DHA and EPA
- Sustainably wild caught in the eastern central waters of the Atlantic Ocean
Our sardines are Sardina pilchardus, packed in water with sea salt and nothing else. We leave the bones and skin in. We hand pack them and slow cook them, and we keep processing to a minimum to retain nutrients and flavor. The bones in canned sardines are soft enough to eat, so you can mash them right in with the fish.
Water packing means you add the fat you want. Flake them onto toast or crackers with lemon and olive oil, toss them into a salad or pasta, or eat them straight from the can. They're kosher, non-GMO and paleo. The can is shelf stable; refrigerate after opening. Product of Morocco.

Ingredients: SARDINES (SARDINA PILCHARDUS), WATER, SEA SALT.
Common Questions
Which canned fish is lowest in mercury?
Sardines are one of the lowest-mercury canned fish, and we mercury test every catch of our Safe Catch Wild Sardines to a limit of 0.1 ppm. Sardines are small, short-lived fish that feed low on the food chain, so they build up far less mercury than large predators like albacore or swordfish, and the FDA and EPA place them in their 'Best Choices' group. Testing every catch means we don't rely on the species average alone. We wanted the healthiest, purest sardines we could offer, so you can enjoy this nutritious superfood with confidence.
What's the difference between bone-in and boneless sardines?
Bone-in sardines keep the fish's fine spine and skin, and our Safe Catch Wild Sardines in Water are packed exactly that way, bones and skin left in. In canned sardines the small bones soften during cooking, so most people eat them along with the fish without noticing much texture. Boneless, skinless sardines have both removed, which gives a milder, flakier fillet but takes more handling of the fish. We leave the bones and skin in, keep processing to a minimum to retain nutrients and flavor, and hand pack and slow cook them.
Are sardines better packed in water or in oil?
It depends on how you plan to use them, and our Safe Catch Wild Sardines are packed in water with only sea salt added. Oil-packed sardines taste richer, while water-packed sardines taste more of the fish itself and add no fat beyond what's in the sardines. Water-packed fish is also easy to season your own way, with lemon, olive oil, mustard or hot sauce, or to mash into a spread or salad.
Are Safe Catch sardines wild caught, and where do they come from?
Yes, our Safe Catch Wild Sardines in Water are sustainably wild caught. They are caught in the eastern central waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and the country of origin is Morocco. The species is Sardina pilchardus, the European pilchard, which is the classic Atlantic sardine.
How much protein and omega-3 is in a can of Safe Catch sardines?
Each 4.4 oz (125 g) can of our Safe Catch Wild Sardines in Water has 23g of protein. For omega-3s, these sardines average over 1,600mg of omega-3 fatty acids per serving. They are a natural source of both DHA and EPA, the two long-chain omega-3s found in oily fish.
What's in Safe Catch Wild Sardines in Water, and are they kosher or paleo?
Our Safe Catch Wild Sardines in Water contain sardines (Sardina pilchardus), water and sea salt, and nothing else. They are kosher, non-GMO and paleo. The sardines are hand packed, slow cooked and minimally processed to retain nutrients and flavor. They contain fish (sardines).
Do Safe Catch sardines need to be refrigerated?
Our Safe Catch Wild Sardines in Water are shelf stable, so an unopened can keeps in the pantry, and they should be refrigerated after opening. For leftovers, move the sardines into a covered glass or plastic container and eat them within 3 to 4 days.
