Lunch on the Pasture: Update from Farmer Craig
Farmer Craig raises grass fed beef for TC Farm on his Southeast Minnesota farm. His kids often help to pitch in with farm chores, pulling thistles and taking a turn on the tractor.
Check in on the cows below and learn how Craig is keeping them nourished as we head into winter.
The Big Picture: Did you know that when you buy beef from TC Farm, you're supporting farmers who raise food in a way that positively impacts the environment, improves animal welfare and creates a more sustainable, humane food system?
Unlike conventional and store bought organic beef raised in confined and dirty feedlots, our cows are happy to enjoy their lunch with plenty of space for a relaxing dining experience.
Using a tractor to lay out hay for the cows to graze on, Farmer Craig makes sure they have plenty to eat as the pasture slows down growing for the season.
Craig raises and harvests organic hay grown on his own farm, mimimizing the environment impact of having it delivered.
Much like our members, TC Farm cows like to eat local, too!
Rotational Grazing 101
Craig uses rotational grazing methods where our cows are moved to different sections of the pasture to prevent overgrazing. This allows the pasture to regenerate and grow back, coming back stronger and healthier each year.
Rotational grazing helps the environment in a number ways:
- Sequesters carbon
- Provides habitat for native plants & species
- Conserves water
- Improve soil health
- Plus, it's better for the cows!
During the colder months, we offer our cows organic hay to keep them nourished.
